In 2024, amidst the height of global inflation, we embarked on a family trip to Istanbul. Our approach to travel blends iconic tourist experiences with living like locals, and Istanbul, with its vibrant culture and deep history, didn’t disappoint. We had been researching this trip for months so had already planned a good itinerary before departing.
Accommodation at The Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Istanbul
Our experience staying here left us with mixed feelings. Here’s our honest review for fellow families considering this destination, shared through the lens of our time there.
As a family of five, the days of squeezing into one hotel room are behind us, so we booked a suite. At first glance, the suite was stunning with ample space and elegant decor. The second bedroom for our older two was lovely, the bathroom was stunning with its own turkish bath incorporated. However, we quickly noticed that it wasn’t particularly child-friendly. The decor included heavy lamps and floor-to-ceiling fixtures that were not too stable or firmly attached! The suite also hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned,this was obvious from the floors and the bathrooms which was disappointing, and we ended up tidying up ourselves during the stay far too often. The pictures online looked immaculate and on first glance this is what the room looked like. Additionally, while the suite had five balconies circling it, all were locked for safety reasons. We requested staff to unlock one, but during the stay, the locks broke—a worrying situation with a toddler in tow.
The facilities at the hotel were good, the breakfast served was local, very fresh and authentic, so if you’re looking for any kid of fry up, you wont find it here. The pool although small was lovely, as this is more of a business hotel rather than one catered for families it didn’t have any extras that children might prefer but it was still a lovely pool that we all enjoyed daily.
Exploring Istanbul
We split our time between well-known tourist landmarks and exploring off-the-beaten-path local gems. Here are some highlights:
- Hagia Sophia Mosque: This iconic site is breathtaking but understandably crowded. Arrive early to soak in its beauty with fewer distractions. Remember to dress modestly when visiting religious sites; take a scarf and ensure your shoulders are covered. Men should consider wearing longer trousers.
- Local Market Visits: The local markets in Istanbul offer a sensory overload of vibrant colors, delicious smells, and authentic shopping experiences. Instead of heading to the larger, more touristy markets, we discovered smaller local markets where you can find the same items for a fraction of the price. A great example was a Sunday market on a side street behind our hotel, where we picked up fresh olives, halwa, and even some “designer” goods at local prices—significantly cheaper than the bigger markets.
- Asian Side of Istanbul: A short boat ride took us to the Asian side, which was a trip highlight. The atmosphere felt more relaxed, and we found the “viral jacket potato” spot from social media—a must-try! It’s worth the journey for the views and the food.
- Non-Touristy Gems: Istanbul has so much to offer beyond the main attractions. We highly recommend seeking out lesser-known cafes, family-friendly parks, and quiet neighborhoods to get a real feel for the city.
- Navigating Istanbul with Kids: Unlike other places in Turkey, Istanbul’s busy streets and cobbled, often broken roads aren’t very practical for young children to roam freely. We kept our toddler safely in a buggy most of the time, which made navigating the bustling city streets much easier.
- Cats Everywhere: Istanbul is famous for its feline population, and you’ll find cats everywhere—on the streets, in cafes, and even lounging around historic sites. While they add charm to the city, not all are friendly. If you or anyone in your family has allergies, be sure to bring antihistamines to avoid any discomfort.
Dental Services
Six months before our trip, I had the misfortune of breaking a tooth and losing a crown. I couldn’t fathom paying another £1,000 in the UK to have it fixed, so I decided to address it while in Istanbul. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of the trip. For just £300 (converted from Turkish Lira), I received excellent care from a reputable dentist. The savings were incredible compared to UK prices, and the procedure itself was efficient and professional. However, navigating the language barrier added some stress, so I recommend bringing a translation app or enlisting help from the hotel staff for such appointments. Dental tourism in Istanbul is becoming increasingly popular, and I can see why—high-quality service at a fraction of the cost.
Practical Tips and Costs
- Revolut and Cash: We usually rely on Revolut, an online account that’s great for traveling abroad. However, in Istanbul, cash is king. Many places prefer cash to avoid high fees, and we found ourselves withdrawing more than expected. Be prepared to take out cash before your trip to avoid hefty ATM charges.
- Transportation: Cab journeys in Istanbul are a mix of convenience and challenge. The hotel can assist with arranging private transfers, but be aware that everyone takes a cut, making this option pricier than hailing a cab yourself. If you’re budget-conscious, it’s worth considering public transport or ride-hailing apps to get around.
- Markets and Shopping: Skip the major tourist markets and explore local ones instead. Not only will you find better deals, but the experience feels more authentic. Fresh produce, local delicacies like olives and halwa, and even souvenirs like fake designer goods can be found at significantly lower prices.
- Budgeting: Istanbul was an expensive trip due to inflation and the overall cost of activities, accommodation, and dining out. Be prepared to spend more than expected, but the experience is worth the investment.

While our stay at The Hilton Hotel Istanbul fell short of expectations due to cleanliness and safety concerns, the city’s charm made up for it.
